Your teeth may be stained and not as white and bright as you’d hope. But you can get the job done at the dentist and in the quickest amount of time. You don’t have to struggle with those DIY teeth whitening kits at all. This guide will go over how the professional teeth whitening process works. Keep reading and you might want to give this a try yourself.

It Starts with a Consultation Appointment

First things first, your dentist will want to see if you are a good fit for teeth whitening. This consultation will include an initial exam that will determine if your teeth and gums are healthy enough. If you are dealing with dental issues, it’s important to get them taken care of as soon as possible.

Your dentist in Irving will be able to point out any issues you may be dealing with. For example, if your smile needs to be straighter, they can recommend treatments such as Fast Braces or Invisalign. Based on the examination, they will provide you with a recommendation.

If you’re dealing with a severe condition, a more complex orthodontic treatment such as traditional braces will be the solution. Aside from this, you may be dealing with teeth and gums that are in poor condition. For this reason, your dentist will recommend procedures that need to be done. A consultation appointment may disqualify you as a candidate for the time being. And it can be due to dental issues that can be manageable. Once they are dealt with, you can consider professional teeth whitening. Otherwise, if everything looks good, they will be able to move on to the next step of your great smile makeover. With that in mind, let’s move forward.

Another Appointment is Set for the Procedure

Your next appointment will be for the whitening procedure itself. This will be done at the dentist’s office since they use professional grade equipment and solutions. The first thing the dentist or technician will do is apply a bleaching gel to your teeth. Next, they’ll use a special light that will activate it. Depending on the dental office and other factors, the procedure can take anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour. The end result will be your teeth getting whiter.

Your dentist may have a take-home teeth whitening kit that you can take home. This will help you achieve and maintain whiter teeth. This kit will be complete with instructions that you will need to follow in order to achieve the best results. On average, the process will take an average of two weeks. The whitening gel that is included in these take-home kits contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The way they work is that they convert into oxygen molecules that will penetrate into the tooth enamel. From there, it will oxidize the stains and discoloration, making the teeth look shades whiter. It’s not unusual to experience tooth sensitivity during the process. This will go away in about a day or two. The dentist may provide you with further instructions on how to deal with any sensitivity that is present.

What to do after your teeth whitening procedure?

After your teeth whitening procedure, you can cross it off your list of 2023 goals/resolutions. You’ve achieved one of the best smile makeovers you can get. However, there are some common instructions that you need to follow. It’s important that you avoid foods and drinks that can stain your teeth. This can include coffee, tea, red wine, and fruits and veggies that are dark in color. When brushing your teeth, use a toothpaste and mouthwash that has whitening abilities.

You should also know that teeth whitening is not permanent. The whiteness can fade over the course of a year and a half or more. For this reason, you will need to make visits to the dentist to ensure your teeth remain whitened. The frequency will be every 12 to 18 months, depending on any factors that may arise. This is where a regular dental appointment will come in handy. Every six months, you are to visit your dentist for regular checkups.

If the dentist notices a change of shade in your teeth, they may offer to do another whitening. Likewise, it’s important to keep up with your oral hygiene regularly to make it as effective as possible. This way, you can keep ahead of any dental issues that can arise. Remember, brushing your teeth at least twice per day (including flossing once daily) can help keep any dental issues such as cavities at bay. Combining this with regular visits to a dentist in Irving will almost guarantee your chances of a great looking smile that you would be proud to show off.

How much will teeth whitening cost?

On average, a teeth whitening session can cost around $650. However, the rates can vary based on several factors such as location, the amount needed for the desired result you want to achieve, and others. Teeth whitening is considered a cosmetic treatment, so it may or may not be covered by your dental insurance. Check with your policy to see what cosmetic procedures are covered. Otherwise, you may want to consider paying out of pocket.
