Position Description:
This position supports the work of the Charles River YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Program Director of Sports will lead, develop, and launch activities that bring youth, adults, and families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through sports (instructional and leagues), and camp. This position develops, organizes, and implements the following Y programs: youth instructional sports (traditional and non-traditional), adult sports and leagues, family-oriented programs, sports-based partnerships, and volunteer coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure programs and services meet community needs, including supervising existing activities, establishing new programs, and expanding within the community as needed, in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Lead leagues serving up to 600 participants.
  • Market and distribute program information.
  • Manage program rosters, enrollment, and reporting. Evaluate program effectiveness.
  • Recruit and hire diverse staff and volunteers across multiple dimensions. Train and develop staff and volunteers to meet program goals and quality standards. Use strategies to motivate and empower staff to achieve objectives.
  • Model relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships internally and externally, including with community organizations. Maintain clear and regular communication within the area of responsibility.
  • Develop and monitor program budgets to meet fiscal goals.
  • Secure and schedule facilities; create and schedule classes, activities, or events. Manage gym and rental schedules.
  • Provide direct instruction/facilitation of 20 hours per week in programs focused on skill development and character building.
  • Develop new programs, leagues, or services aligned with community needs and strategic goals.
  • Participate in community field and gymnasium summits.
  • Work evening and weekend shifts as required.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

  • Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Recreation, Health Sciences, or related field.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification.
  • Two years of experience supervising and developing staff and volunteers.
  • Two years of sports coaching experience.
  • Experience operating sports leagues in a leadership role.
  • Within 30 days of hire, complete Child Abuse Prevention, Working with Program Volunteers, CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all social and economic backgrounds.
