Under general supervision, performs general duty police work to enforce the law, preserve public safety and order, and apprehend offenders. Police Officers are employed at three distinct levels: Police Officer - Recruit, Police Officer - Academy Graduate, and Police Officer - Advanced Entry. Duties include patrolling designated areas, responding to calls for police assistance or investigation, establishing and maintaining control of persons and traffic at scenes, providing protection of life and property, conducting preliminary investigations, gathering evidence, taking statements, issuing citations, making arrests, preparing written reports, appearing in court as a witness or arresting officer, and presenting oral presentations to the public. Knowledge required includes principles and practices of modern police work, laws governing arrest and custody, patrol procedures, criminal investigation techniques, court rules, and radio procedures. Candidates must meet specific education and experience requirements depending on the level of entry. Special requirements include U.S. citizenship, minimum age of 21, valid Washington State Driver's License, successful completion of polygraph and psychological exams, criminal background check, physical and health standards, and firearm possession eligibility. Conviction of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence may disqualify candidates. The position is represented by the Police Guild union.
